Winter and Summer Olympic Sports History

The Nordic Games, held in Sweden in 1901, were the world’s first multisport international competition for winter sports. The Nordic Games, which were initially planned by General Viktor Gustaf Balk, were staged once again in 1903 and 1905, and then every fourth year after that until 1926. Balk was a close friend of Olympic Games creator Pierre de Coubertin and a founding member of the International Olympic Committee. Prior to the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, he tried to include winter sports, notably figure skating, to the Olympic program me, but was unsuccessful. Ulrich Salchow and Madge Sayers won the individual titles in the four competitions for figure skating.

Three years later, the IOC was presented with a proposal by the Italian count Eugenio Brunetta d’Usseaux to hold a week of winter sports as part of the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. The reason the organizers objected to the plan was that they wanted to preserve the legitimacy of the Nordic Games and were worried that there wouldn’t be enough facilities for winter sports. For the 1916 Games, which were scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, the concept was revived. Although the 1916 Olympics were scheduled to include speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey, and Nordic skiing, they were postponed due to the onset of World War I.
